FAQs

What is physical therapy?

Physical therapy is a healthcare specialty focused on reducing pain, restoring movement, improving strength, and helping patients return to normal activities after injury, surgery, or chronic conditions. Treatment may include hands-on therapy, exercise, education, and movement retraining.

What does a physical therapist do?

Physical therapists are doctorate-level musculoskeletal experts who specialize in helping people improve their physical function and quality of life. In other words, we work with our patients to help them achieve their goals, whether that’s recovering from an injury or surgery, reaching a new athletic level, or minimizing pain.

Do I need a referral to start physical therapy?

In many states, you can start physical therapy without a physician referral (this is called direct access). However, some insurance plans may still require one. Contact us and we’ll help verify your benefits.

What conditions do you treat?

  • Back and neck pain

  • Shoulder, knee, and hip injuries

  • Sports injuries

  • Post-surgical rehabilitation

  • Arthritis and joint pain

  • Tendonitis and overuse injuries

What should I expect during my first visit?

Your first visit typically includes:

  • A detailed discussion of your symptoms and medical history

  • A movement and strength assessment

  • Diagnosis and explanation of your condition

  • A personalized treatment plan

  • Initial hands-on treatment or exercises

You’ll leave with a clear plan and next steps.

How long are appointments?

Initial appointments are typically 60 to 75 minutes; subsequent appointments are typically around 60 minutes.

How many sessions will I need?

The number of visits depends on your condition, severity, and goals. Some patients improve in just a few visits, while others may need several weeks of care. Your therapist will outline expectations during your first visit.

Will physical therapy hurt?

Some treatments may cause mild soreness, especially early on. However, therapy should not cause sharp or severe pain. We adjust treatments to match your tolerance and comfort level.

Do you accept insurance?

We accept most major insurance plans. Our team can verify your coverage and explain any copays or deductibles before your first appointment.

What should I wear to my physical therapy appointment?

Wear comfortable clothing that allows movement. For example:

  • Shorts for knee or hip treatment

  • A tank top for shoulder treatment

  • Athletic shoes
